The Story

Background

Anne Arundel County Fire Department’s Fire Marshal’s Office manages permit inspections, recurring inspections, and field assignments across a large combination system. The department had relied on paper and an aging Microsoft Access database that its IT team could no longer support.

Challenge

The agency needed more than a digital replacement. It had to standardize addresses and terminology across GIS, CAD, inspection, and response systems; support experienced inspectors and new firefighters; and give leaders usable data for risk-based assignments, quality assurance, and staffing decisions.

Solution

Anne Arundel County built configurable inspection types, checklists, dashboards, saved views, and automated Fire Marshal referrals in First Due. Field companies receive assigned inspections, map nearby occupancies, document findings with photos, and notify the Fire Marshal’s Office from the workflow when they need guidance.

Results

Inspection data now supports more than compliance. Contacts, occupancy details, hazards, and preplan information can be available to responders, while dashboards help supervisors track incomplete visits, referrals, and checklist quality. Map-based scheduling also helps crews group inspections and reduce repeated travel and data entry.
